HeartCare is a "coronary risk assessment program" available to the public through their doctors in private practice. This comprehensive screening program is provided free to selected doctors and their patients under an educational grant from MSD. Ever since HeartCare was established in Malaysia, approximately 56,000 patients nationwide have benefited from this free screening program.
The objective of HeartCare is to promote greater awareness among the doctors and patients in managing the risk of cardiovascular diseases that will hopefully lead to more lives being saved.
HeartCare is designed to assist the doctor in identifying patients with increased risk of coronary heart disease. Appropriate management of such patients will be determined by the doctor.
In this program, patients with certain risk factors for coronary heart disease will be invited by their doctor to the clinic to undergo a series of tests that will later help determine their coronary heart disease risk status. Patients will be screened for:
Body fat composition/body mass index
Blood Pressure
Full lipid profile
Fasting plasma glucose
Microalbuminuria/ proteinuria (an early sign of kidney damage)
Patients will also be required to fill in a Lifestyle Inventory Questionnaire in order to identify other risk factors for heart diseases.
A patient’s coronary risk profile will not only provide the doctor with an up-to-date and evidence-based summary of their heart attack risk, it will also allow the doctor to make recommendations to reduce such risks. It is hoped that HeartCare program will stimulate a fuller doctor-patient discussion that will help patients to better understand their disease conditions.
