A source for accurate, reliable information that should stimulate better communication between the patient and physician.

With the increasing number of Malaysians proactively taking control of their health, MSD Malaysia launched its corporate medical education campaign with The Merck Manual of Medical Information – 2nd Home Edition in December 2005.

The campaign was a follow-up to the successful book launch held in November 2004.

“The public’s response to the first campaign was overwhelming,” shared Ewe Kheng Huat, Managing Director, MSD Malaysia.  “This only reaffirms that Malaysians are taking a more proactive role in managing their health.  The better they understand the medical information, the better equipped they are to have discussions with their health care professionals,” he added.

Readers are first guided on how to use the 2nd Home Edition.  The book then moves on to cover the basic fundamentals of the human body, pharmaceuticals before moving on to the various health topics.  Disease information is first explained in the introduction section for each health topic, continuing on to explain the disease causes, symptoms, diagnosis, prognosis & treatment.

No book can replace the expertise and advice of health care professionals who have direct relationships with a patient.  The Merck Manual of Medical Information – 2nd Home Edition is meant to supplement that relationship.  The book is not meant for self-diagnosis or self-treatment.  Rather it is a source of accurate, reliable information that should stimulate better communication between the patient and physician.

The 2-week campaign was supported with ads and a contest in a local English daily. A free copy of The Merck Manual of Medical Information – 2nd Home Edition was given to the first 150 readers who provided all-correct answers to the contest each week.

Merck Manuals

In 1899, Merck published the first edition of The Merck Manual, a 192-page resource book designed to aid physicians and pharmacists.  By the 1980s, The Merck Manual was the world’s largest-selling medical text and had been translated into more than a dozen languages.  It is now in its 17th edition.  In 1997, Merck created The Merck Manual – Home Edition to provide the benefits of The Merck Manual to the general public.  Now in its second edition, more than 2 million copies have been sold.  Additional books such as The Merck Index for chemists, The Merck Manual for Geriatrics, The Merck Veterinary Manual and The Merck Manual of Health & Aging were developed to provide professionals and consumers with useful healthcare information.  Merck makes these manuals available on a not-for-profit basis and free of any marketing information or promotions as a service to the community.  All of the manuals, with the exception of The Merck Index, are available free online at msd-malaysia.com
